My major problem with guns is more from a philosophical standpoint than a practical one. I find it lamentable that human beings would invent an instrument of such destruction that it could take a life simply by squeezing a finger. But it is a true reflection of our depravity that we would then proceed to use these objects on our fellow man.
That said, I recognize that we live in a society where guns (and access to them) are a major issue, and were deemed important enough by our Founding Fathers to warrant Constitutional protection. Gun ownership is one of those topics that means nothing to me personally, as I have no intention of ever owning one. However, I find that a major problem with our society is that people are only willing to stand up for rights that they have a personal interest in, but sit back and watch as others’ rights are infringed upon simply because they have no personal stake.
In other words, I support the right for individuals to own guns in the same sense that I would hope someone who does not play violent video games would support them as a right to free speech and artistic expression.
