I was talking with a friend and finally realized why I don't like sports. More accurately, why I don't like professional / collegiate sports (read: the "sports" everyone talks about). I make the distinction because, contrary to popular opinion, I actually do enjoy playing many sports: tennis, ultimate frisbee, volley ball, bowling, paintball, laser tag. I simply enjoy games in general: board, video, or otherwise.
But my tastes diverge from those of society at large when the sole opportunity for participation is limited to being a spectator. In other words, I WANT TO PLAY! It doesn't matter what kind of game it is; I could be sitting and watching the latest and greatest video game, but after about ten minutes I'm going to ask to have a turn. I would have zero interest in the sports I currently enjoy if all I could do was sit and watch from the stands or at home in my living room.
It's like a friend saying, "Hey, a bunch of us are getting together to play Monopoly. Want to come watch?" How awful.
