I’ve learned a truth that not everyone seems to understand: if someone attempts to derive his happiness from comparing himself to others, he will live a life that is never satisfied. No matter how rich, smart, or attractive he is, there will always be someone else who is richer, smarter, or more attractive. I’ve seen this confirmed in several areas of my life.
Not only will he be dissatisfied, but his relationships can quickly become toxic. He will always be comparing himself to those around him, trying to decide how he measures up. And when someone else has him outmatched in one area, he will look for other areas where he is better. I believe happiness comes from meaningful relationships in which we celebrate others’ strengths and help them in their weaknesses, rather than seeking to bring them down or laud their shortcomings.
