What’s the first thing you think when you hear a car alarm?
“Call the police, someone is stealing that car!”
or
“Some idiot hit the wrong button.”
We’ve been trained for so long not to take car alarms seriously because more than 99.9% of the time, it was bumped by a shopping cart, or the owner has her purse packed too tightly. However, the other day I was walking out of a store and I heard loud randomized honking (not a car alarm, the actual horn honking). “BEEP! Buh-BEEEEP! Buh-buh-buh BEEEEEEEEP!” Here is the first thing I thought,
“HOLY CRAP, SOMEONE IS BEING RAPED!”
Seriously, that’s what raced through my mind. I looked around at the cars in the lot and couldn’t identify which one was honking, or if it was even a real person in distress. The honking stopped shortly after, but that lead me to a revelation—if you want to get people’s attention, car alarms should sound like someone in trouble honking the horn!
But now that I think about it, we would probably become desensitized to that too. So maybe we should just leave well enough alone.
