I’m willing to be honest about this, even if it makes me look a little self-centered. I’ve been recycling for years, but my primary motivation is because all those boxes and bottles take up way too much space in my kitchen garbage can. The volume of recyclables I bring out to the curb every week is equal to (if not greater than) the volume of non-recyclables. In other words, using that big red bin cuts in half the number of times I have to empty the trash, not to mention spending half as much money on garbage bags.
I know I’m positively impacting the environment, but if I’m being completely forthright, I’m not sure that fact alone would induce me to recycle. It’s a lot easier to participate in altruistic acts when I experience direct positive results for myself.
