I remember when Steve Carell (who played the character Michael Scott) announced he was leaving The Office, many people claimed that it was the end of the show. Carell has been absent for the last couple seasons and I have still enjoyed The Office. It was not until I went back to watch some older episodes where Carell’s character was present that I actually began to realize how much better the show is without him. Michael was always known for being ridiculously over the top and creating incredibly awkward situations, albeit in a charming and innocent sort of way (no easy feat!). But the character’s antics seemed to drown out all the other nuances that other characters brought to the show, perhaps with the exception of the relationships between Jim / Pam and Jim / Dwight.
Now that Carell has left the show, other characters are explored more fully, revealing the dynamic relationships
that would be present in any office. And while some of the shtick is still a little far-fetched, it is nowhere near the absurdity that Michael created. It was also hard for me to believe that anyone of that level of incompetence could last more than a few weeks as a manager. Thus, I think the show has improved now that Michael Scott has left the office.
