I often take for granted many of the blessings that I enjoy. It’s just human nature to become accustomed to life’s familiarities, despite how wonderful they may be. But I have developed a way to instantly appreciate the wonderful things and people that I have in my life. For example, during a meal I imagine what it would be like if people could only have a sense of taste and smell one day out of every year. That would easily be the best day of the year, outstripping birthdays and holidays. After such musings, I am immediately thankful that I actually do get to enjoy tasty meals whenever I want. It really does make delicious food taste even better!
Similarly, when I am with people I love, I imagine that after I die, I get to relive one day of my life and this is it. Thinking that way makes me take in all the familiar details and refocuses my attention on the significant.
