Surprise parties, blowing out candles, opening presents, going out to eat—all of these birthday traditions are fine and dandy. But in my opinion, one ritual reigns supreme among the rest: bringing in cupcakes for the class.
What a great way to actually get people excited to celebrate with you! Rather than expecting gifts, bring a succulent treat in for everyone else! Maybe it’s the hobbit in me, but these were what made classmates’ birthdays the highlight of elementary school.
We started bringing back this tradition my senior year of high school, but we took it to a whole new level. Whoever was turning a year older got to bring in lunch for the rest of the group that sat at our lunch table. I remember my mom bringing in Taco Bell, each meal special-ordered as requested by my buddies the day before. Other moms brought in pizza, KFC, or Chinese food. And for a table of hungry high school guys, it was pretty much the best thing ever.
I think I’m going to start bringing cupcakes into the office on my birthday.
