I know people who begin salivating when someone mentions Johnny Depp and Tim Burton in the same sentence. As if that combination of actor/director is as wonderful as chocolate and peanut butter. Sure, Depp is a talented actor, and Burton has a vivid imagination.
But I take issue when people talk about the two like they are some sort of collaborative visionaries. They have been doing the same thing for over two decades, which is the antithesis of creativity. Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd, Alice in Wonderland, Dark Shadows; they all have that same “creepy funhouse” vibe. And Johnny Depp is always, well, Johnny Depp. Slap on some white makeup and a zany hairdo, speak in a creepy voice, and call it a day.
One could argue that an artist who does not grow should find a new craft.
