I often hear people talk about how much better things used to be in days’ gone by. Yet I strongly question the validity of these assertions. I think people have a tendancy to remember only the good things while trying to forget the bad. Hence the term, “nostalgia.”
Another contributing factor is the prevalence of information in the most recent generation. We are constantly and immediately updated on all happenings around our country and the globe via multiple mediums. Since the media has a vested interest in reporting bad news (which is a different blog post entirely), we hear far more about the bad news than the good. More than 20 years ago, you would have had to wait for the nightly news or your local paper.
And so I will always question the legitimacy of claims about how much more "safe" or "moral" our society was in days of yore.
