Children should not have to spend their free time hawking overpriced merchandise. Let’s drop all pretenses: it’s not about the kids winning awards (the time they would have to invest is not worth an iPod), and it’s not about building character (I’d rather see them spend their time doing something truly productive like homework, playing, or helping out around the house). It's about compensating for poorly allocated resources.
The “No Soliciting” sign took care of the door-to-door saleschildren, but I still take issue with being accosted every time I have to run into the grocery store. Forget the merchandise; if the school, sports team, or troop really needs the money that badly, I will just give them five dollars to go away.
