The other day I was talking with a friend who mentioned that his brother just graduated from high school. I immediately responded, “Which college is he going to?” The moment the words left my mouth, I was shocked that I had said them.
When did we reach a point in our society where we just assume that everyone should automatically be going to college? What about people who want to pursue careers that don’t require four-year degrees? What about trade schools and apprenticeships? What about homemakers? What about people who simply have no desire to attend an institution of higher learning?
I think my comment to my friend was a reflection of our society’s view in general. Sure, many graduates should go to college since it will greatly help in choosing a profession, developing skills, and building connections. But it is no guarantee of success, and it is certainly not for everyone.
